The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is renowned for having some of the lowest transaction fees of any major blockchain. The standard base fee is just 0.00001 XRP — known as 10 drops — which at current prices translates to roughly $0.0000152 USD per transaction.
What Are XRPL Transaction Fees?
Every transaction submitted to the XRP Ledger requires a small fee paid in XRP. This fee serves two key purposes: it prevents spam attacks on the network and ensures efficient use of computational resources. Unlike many blockchains, XRPL fees are not paid to validators — they are permanently burned, removing XRP from circulation forever.
The Base Fee: 10 Drops
The minimum fee for a standard transaction is 10 drops, where 1 XRP = 1,000,000 drops. At a price of $2.00 per XRP, this means one transaction costs just $0.00002. You would need to execute over 50,000 transactions to spend $1.00 in fees.
One million XRPL transactions cost approximately $15.20 in total fees — making it 265x cheaper than Solana on a per-transaction basis.
How Fees Are Calculated
Each rippled server maintains a dynamic cost threshold based on current network load. During normal conditions the base fee is stable at 10 drops. When the network receives more than 200 transactions per ledger, the open ledger cost escalates proportionally to prevent congestion. Validators manage this curve through a voting mechanism to ensure network health.
Fee Burn Mechanism
All fees collected are permanently destroyed. Since the XRP Ledger launched in June 2012, more than 14.3 million XRP have been burned through transaction fees. This deflationary mechanism gradually reduces the total supply of 100 billion XRP, creating long-term scarcity.
Fee Stability vs Ethereum and Bitcoin
While Ethereum gas fees can spike dramatically during periods of high network activity — sometimes exceeding $50 per transaction — XRPL fees remain stable and predictable. Even at peak load, XRPL fees increase only temporarily and normalize quickly according to Glassnode's 2024 market analysis.
Transaction Types and Their Costs
- Standard payment: 10 drops (0.00001 XRP)
- Multi-signed transactions: Higher multiple of the base fee
- EscrowFinish with Fulfillment: Base fee adjusted by validator vote
- AMM operations: Standard base fee applies
The XRP Ledger achieves deterministic finality in 3–5 seconds at these near-zero costs, making it one of the most cost-efficient settlement networks available for high-volume payment applications.
